Steel City Con Winter 2012

Last Saturday, I attended the Steel City Con in Monroeville, PA. Steel City Con is basically the toy and pop culture convention of Pittsburgh. Steel City has everything from toys, comic books, movies, but they also get some celebrity guests. This year I had to attend because of two guest that were attending.

I’m a big Star Wars fan. In fact, once a year my friend Malorie and I watch all six movies in one day. We’ve be having what we call StarWarsFest for six years now. Our sixth StarWarsFest was actually just a few weeks ago and then the next week was SteelCityCon, where it was announced a while back that Anthony Daniels (C3PO) and Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) would be guest.

If you aren’t familiar with conventions, basically you get into a line, to get into a line, only to get into another line. I got in line to get my day pass, then I got into the line to get in the building, and then I got into a line to meet Anthony Daniels. Truthfully, I thought the line moved incredibly fast, but it turns out I waited in that line for an hour and a half. I think it helps that there is so much going on to look at. There was actually someone dressed as C3PO and there was an R2D2 driving around as well. I actually got a chance to take my picture with both of them because R2D2 drove up and stopped right in front of me and then C3PO waddled over for the picture.

Anthony Daniels was a really nice guy. He actually would leave the signing area to talk to people in line. Once I got to where he was, I got his autograph, he asked me if my favorite movie was Empire Strikes Back because I was wearing a shirt with Empire on it. I told him it was and he replied, “Not Episode: One” sarcastically. I really enjoyed that!

After eating lunch I got into the line to meet Billy Dee Williams. Billy Dee Williams was also there with his son Corey Dee Williams, who had a part as an alien named Klaatu in Return of the Jedi. I didn’t wait too long to meet Billy Dee Williams, but when I was about two people away, Billy Dee took a bathroom break. While waiting for him to return, Corey Dee looked over to us and said, “I can sign his name for you guys”, which was cool of him to joke around. Billy Dee returned and I was up to get his autograph and to talk to him. I actually didn’t have a Star Wars question but a Batman question. Billy Dee Williams was in the 1989 movie Batman, as Harvey Dent who in the comic books is also the Batman villain Two Face. I asked Billy Dee if he was really hoping to play Two Face in the sequels and told me that he actually took the part hoping to play Two Face, but the movie went into another direction and never got the chance.

It’s not every day you get to meet someone from one of your favorite movies, but to meet two in one day is pretty awesome. Really had a fun time being there. Plus, I got to look around at all the merchant tables and found the NES game Kid Icarus that I have been trying to get for a long while.

I really do recommend going to the Steel City Con to anyone. It’s just a good day out and you never know what you’ll find or who you’ll meet.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love the Zelda video game series. I own pretty much all of the Zelda games except for the crappy CD-i versions that I’m pretty sure have been locked away in the chamber of secrets or Area 51 in Indiana Jones. There are a few places I need to fill in like The Adventures of Link on GBA and Spirit Tracks for the Nintendo DS. There is also a game that I have secured away that I will not take a picture of. It’s too powerful for human eyes.
